With three books focusing on gift ideas under her belt, Carla Visser definitely has gifting sorted. We caught up with Carla to find out more about the gifts that she would like to receive and if she really always gives homemade gifts….
Gifting season is upon us! With all the great ideas in the three books that you have written, do you make all your gifts yourself?
I would like say always, but more often than not I do try. I can actually see a little bit of disappointment when I hand someone a gift I did not make. My favourite DIY gifts to give are my photo canvas or photo transfer keepsakes. (see photos below)
What is your favourite gift from Give and why?
I would have to say the silhouette of Table Mountain cut from old scaffolding boards. I made a large one for myself that we hung above our fireplace. We love it because we love Cape Town and all its beautiful landmarks. I myself love the rustic and weathered look of the wood. I love that my husband cut it with his own two hands. I love that it was made by up-cycling discarded wood into a showpiece. And I must admit, I love love love that it fills that odd space above the braai perfectly!
Why do you think a homemade gift is better than something bought in a shop?
Because the gift literally says I love you so much that I took the time to make something for you. In today’s busy life time is the most precious thing one can give.
What gift in the book would you like to receive yourself?
The child in me wants to say the pink unicorn pencil holder…..but I would love to receive the chunky wood beaded necklace in white. I really makes a statement and it is something I have never seen before. And again, to think that someone has taken the time to sit and weave that necklace especially for me would make the gift extra special. And let’s admit it – white goes with everything!
