The queen of cake-baking and decorating, Katrien van Zyl, has just released her latest title Katrien’s gifts from the kitchen, AND had her first baby, the most perfect little boy called JJ! She talks to us about being pregnant while working on a book, and why this new title is a must-have!
Tell us more about Gifts from the Kitchen? How is it different to your other books?
This book consists of my favourite gift-giving recipes. It is a baking book for any home-baker but shows you how to present everyday baked items beautifully. Whereas my previous books focused more on cake decorating, in this book the projects and recipes are easy enough for anyone to follow. Where I’ve used slightly more difficult techniques I have incorporated step-by-step photos. I have also included different packaging ideas to personalise your baked gift.
Who came first, JJ or the idea for the book?
Hahaha! The idea for the book was born in an overseas trip with my beloved publisher Wilsia, while eating German food and drinking red wine. The idea was placed on hold while we worked together on another book, and just before I became pregnant with JJ I started working on Gifts from the Kitchen.
Which is harder? Being pregnant or writing a book?
Producing a book is by far much harder work than being pregnant, except that I had to test recipes while feeling extremely nauseous which was quite a challenge! A book takes just as long to carry and also involves mental and physical exhaustion and sleepless nights – just like pregnancy. But the end result, as with a real baby is definitely worth it!
Now that you have little JJ, has baking and cake decorating stopped?
Yes, normal life and baking has completely stopped as every day revolves around baby’s needs, but I hope to get back to cake decorating (and sleeping and replying to emails…) eventually.
Hierdie wonderlike nuwe titel is ook in Afrikaans beskikbaar: Katrien se geskenke uit die kombuis.
