Geert Schuiling, the author of Anyone can do leatherwork, tells us why you have to try this craft and why leatherwork really is for everyone!
Convince a newbie why they should take up leather craft.
Leatherwork is a very satisfying and rewarding hobby or trade for any individual or family – whether you want to do it as a hobby or to start your own business. The techniques for basic leather craft are quick and easy to learn and it does not take forever to make something beautiful.
It looks like an expensive craft, is it?
No it’s not. You can start off with very basic tools, some of which you might even have in your garage already. As you progress you can acquire more and more tools and if you are selling your items you can use the profit to fund your hobby.
What are the bare essentials you would need to get started?
Like in any craft there is always a large wish list of tools you would like. To start off with you will only need some basic tools: a cutting mat, NT cutter (utility knife), scissors , a steel ruler, nylon mallet, a steel hammer, a set of round hole punches, a revolving hole punch, an awl and sewing needles.
Leather isn’t cheap though…
The perception of leather being expensive is relative if you compare apples with apples. Fabric, wood, silver, metal and other craft materials all have a price tag. At Woodheads we have an off-cut section where you can buy smaller pieces and end of line leather skins at reduced prices. This section is constantly busy and it is amazing what our customers make from these leathers – key rings, card holders, cellphone pouches, wrist straps, small bags and much more.
Does Woodheads offer classes in leather work?
Yes, we have craft workshops on various subjects where you can learn to make anything from key rings and i-pad covers, belts, bags, satchels and brief cases to sandals and novelty items like wine bottle carriers and photo boxes. We also customize craft workshops to your needs.
There is a Woodheads in Cape Town, but what about everyone else?
